Why Black Coffee Stays Winning

Sourced from http://soulisticmusic.tumblr.com

Top South African DJ Black Coffee is doing more much more than play music these days, the man is forever on stages talking empowerment, music ownership and branding. This past weekend he addressed music enthusiasts and hopefuls at the Red Bull Music Academy, where he is also an alumnus, having been part of the academy in 2003
He graced the stage after industry veterans DJ Christos and Vinny Da Vinci, then after him Francois K gave a much insightful view into his wealth of knowledge.
The great Black Coffee entertained numerous questions from the audience after his lecture. @SoulisticMusic went on to quiz the DJ about his many talks and musicality.
This is what came out of the Twitterview conducted on Sunday, with part 2 to follow soon.
@SoulisticMusic:You recently spoke at the Global Inspiration Tour and lectured at the #RBMA Red Bull Music Academy, how important are these platforms for you?
@RealBlackCoffee: Very important, I’m very much exposed to the markets the corporate is trying to reach. I think good collaborations can emerge.
@SoulisticMusic: You mentioned that music alone is not enough to address some issues, what are you trying to achieve with these talks?
@RealBlackCoffee: I would like to help people realize how we all need each other, both artists and corporate.
@SoulisticMusic: You stressed the importance of education at #RBMA, having studied music, do you apply most things you learned?
@RealBlackCoffee: Yes, I apply most of my music background in what I do, whether it’s in studio or on stage.
@SoulisticMusic: At the Global Inspiration Tour you spoke on global branding. Which countries do you still want to introduce to your Black Coffee brand?
@RealBlackCoffee: Japan. They have a big market for Dance music.
@SoulisticMusic: In a time of social media, how important is this for you? Do you think it is utilized well?
@RealBlackCoffee: Yes, very much so. It helps me communicate my work to the market.
@SoulisticMusic: You mentioned refusing Macy Gray’s US$600. Is that part of taking ownership of your work and asserting yourself?
@RealBlackCoffee: Yes, it is. It is also separating hobby from business and understanding my worth as an artist.
@SoulisticMusic: At the #RBMA Francois K mentioned having about 6 back ups of his work. Is that the case with you too, how do you guard your work?
@RealBlackCoffee: I do as well. I wanna be able to save it in all cyberspace in the future.
@SoulisticMusic: What are your hopes and dreams for Soulistic Music?
@RealBlackCoffee: To grow and have good relationships with international main stream labels and managements.
@SoulisticMusic: How were you received at Circoloco- Ibiza? Are you likely play there again? How is the scene there?
@RealBlackCoffee: Amazing underground scene….the reception was awesome. We are in talks of doing more shows outside of Spain with them.
@SoulisticMusic: “Start your own dance” You said this at your TEDx talk a few weeks back. What do you mean by this?
@RealBlackCoffee: We must stop copying what other countries are doing. We have the most amazing country and market. LET’S DO US!
@SoulisticMusic: Is the South African music industry as stagnant as some think it is? How important is innovation?
@RealBlackCoffee: To some extent we are! But…remember we are new in this. With time we shall expand our sound.
@SoulisticMusic: What elements are you likely to incorporate on your new music/next album?
@RealBlackCoffee: I really can’t put into words but I can’t got the idea and concept on lockdown.
@SoulisticMusic: What advise can you give to young aspiring DJ’s and Producers?
@RealBlackCoffee: Research who’s the best and why they are the best, work on how you can be different and master that.
@SoulisticMusic: Which young artists should people look out for, that you think are phenomenal?
@RealBlackCoffeeUnplugged_SA, Mondlingc and @khensyKhensy to mention but a few. There is a lot of talent in our country coming out.
